I went to rotten tomatoes after watching the movie to see how people rated this movie. I have mixed feelings and from what I saw online so did critics and audience, but I never let that make a deciding factor for me. I stay away from reviews that critics give they look for the things I don’t care about, I have three main areas I focus on in a movie, 1) Was I entertained, 2) Did I have a good time, 3) Did I come out of the movie wanting more?
I know those all mean pretty much the same thing, but I hope by reading my other reviews, I tend to make sure that I am having fun, I go to movie to get entertained, to leave my world and go to another world where I can enjoy a good story. I like to give the example of transformers when I talk to people about movies. You know what that movie is about, robots that transform and you also know that it is action packed and you are going to see ridiculous things happening. You might be the type of person and come out of it hating it, why? was it the action or the big explosions? Maybe the lack of story made you hate it? Come people, it was transformers, what else would happen there?
Ok, back to Terminator, I just wanted to make a point about these kind of movies and why some people might end up hating them. I thought of that when I saw the bad reviews for Genesys, did people expect something different? was it the lack of intense violence?, Story? what? This movie brings us back to the beginning and give us an alternative view of the impending war of the machines. What I liked about it was the new direction it took with the story that has been re-hashed over and over and over. Honestly ever Terminator movie even though it dealt with the war that was going to arrive, it really just kept telling us the same story several times, I felt like ground hog day with a terminator.
There are some boring aspects of the movie and I think people might of panned this one because of same story again part, and Arnold doing this thing again as always. There were some cheesy moments that seemed forced and I wondered why would they put that in there and someone actually thought that was worth adding into the movie? The movie making process is still so interesting to me and I have a hard time wondering how some movies get made, but they are. This movie has many well known names and the big draw was the characters, but aside from the weak story that we already know and the acting which wasn’t bad really, I liked the characters. I enjoyed it for what it is worth, I knew this was an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie and it dealt with time travel and there was going to be some crazy stuff going on. I had a good time with it, it didn’t really have any slow moments and it had plenty of action for my taste with Arnold doing his bashing like every movie he is in. Overall I think this could have been a better movie and even though they did have a new spin on an old story, it did lack a little with the way they told their story which made it an ok experience for me. I did like the “villain” of the movie who had tons of lines and more acting than the previous “villains”. They put good use to Jason Clarke, he did great at his part which made the movie better for me, that was the twist I liked about it. Emilia Clarke played Sarah Connor she is better known for her role in Game of Thrones, I think she was the weak link for me, I didn’t buy her as the tough Sarah Connor that has been portrayed in previous movies. Then there is Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese, he does have some believable acting, but his character would be been better served with another actor.
I believe you will have fun with this movie and seeing another angle of an original was fun, but it does deserve the poor reviews out there and lack of excitement that people had for it. I went into this like I do every movie and with the transformer mind frame, this is a time travel movie and it is action based, so go and have fun with that.
If you are bored and have nothing else to do watch this movie, you will enjoy it, but if there is a choice for another show to watch or activity to do, go there first, this is your guilty pleasure movie.
