If you saw the first Tron back in the 80’s or more recent on DVD and enjoyed it, some might say you are a geek. Well I must be a geek be cause I absolutely thought that this movie is worth going and going again to. Critics trashed the storyline and gave it bad reviews. I have a problem with that, for some reason critics must be going to these Tron movies and really expecting to see a storyline or a plot twist that will blow your mind. I would have to say they are the geeks then. I recently read another review and I hate reading other people’s review before mine, but I had no choice as it was splashed on the entire entertainment section of the paper. This guy basically trashed the movie based on the lack of storyline. Really?!? he expected a Storyline on a Sci-Fi?
I got to watch Tron Legacy opening night and went for the upgrade and saw it in IMAX 3D. I have now seen both the original 80’s Tron and the new and improved Tron Legacy. I went into this movie expecting some serious Special effects and a great time with the action and of course the light cycles. Not once was I hoping for a storyline or an Oscar worthy performance. Let’s face it people the movie is Tron its about a computer wiz that figures out a way to get into computers. That right there should give you a clue, (no pun intended) IT IS SCI-FI!!!! Now that I got that out of the way I will tell you what I enjoyed about the movie. Yes I enjoyed it! I would even go as far as saying that it was one of the most entertaining movies I have seen this year. The effects were by far more amazing than I would have hoped for and the characters delivered to make movie exciting to watch. Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) and Quorra (Olivia Wilde) had great chemistry, adding to the movies characters. The acting was better than the first Tron if you are looking for that. Sam is brought to the “Grid” and gets a chance to find out what happened to his dad Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges).
From the very start until the end you are taken for a ride, high speed chases, base jumping, Light cycle, fast cars, recognizers and many other vehicles that I don’t want to spoil for you. The fight scene were great and you get to see some great villains. Needless to say that watching it in IMAX 3D is the only way that this movie should be seen. I can’t speak for the other formats, but if you are looking for in your face, thunder thumping sound effects, find an IMAX theater and watch it there.
There are some cool homages to the first Tron movie that a lot of the people will enjoy, but the updated look made for some stunning shots. So go watch Tron Legacy and have a good time with your pop corn and large soda. This is truly a movie to take the kids and escape the real world for a fun night out. Remember folks it is TRON not a thought provoking movie.
My Pick 2GO and have fun!
