If you’re like me, when you think Marvel movies, you think heroes right? Brightly colored costumes, over the top villains, snarky one liners. Well, Deadpool is no different, but it may surprise you on how it gets there. This is a more atypical Marvel movie I guess is what I am saying, like a villain playing dress-up as a want-to-be hero.
Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is your friendly neighborhood murderous mercenary who is just as likely to cut you with his wit than with his knife. Long before we ever learn why Wilson wears his Spiderman-esk red suit, we learn why he is known as the “merc with a mouth”. If you expect clever puns from your Marvel movies, Deadpool delivers in spades. You’ll find yourself splitting from laughter right from the opening credits.
The movies takes a darker turn when we learn that Wade Wilson has been diagnosed with late stage cancer and is given a very short life expectancy. This is when Wilson is approached by an organization that promises a cure for his cancer along with extraordinary super human powers. Left with no other choice, Wilson agrees, but the process takes its toll, curing his cancer, but forever altering both body and mind.
Deadpool is a near perfect fan service to the Marvel franchise comic books that promises everything you don’t want your kids to see. Seriously, I can’t stress this enough. This is not the Avengers, Deadpool is not a role model and you should not buy Deadpool bed sheets for your eight year old. As I stated above, Deadpool has a mouth, and he uses it in the most colorful ways, often breaking the fourth wall and talking directly to the audience as fans of the comic would expect. Deadpool is brimming with beautiful, highly stylized and very graphic fight scenes that leave you in awe and just a little blood spattered.
Even though the movie runs just short of two hours, it never felt like it was dragging on or lost its momentum. There are all of the expected cameos that tight Deadpool together with the greater Marvel universe and help things feel cohesive for those less familiar with this specific story line. If you are looking for a fun, sexy, action packed, and a little crazy at times movie, this is it.
